Ask Rach #3: Something I Wish I Knew in High School

what I wish I knew in high school

To be honest, I wish I knew God more. I wish I knew more than, “God has a plan for me.” You may read this and start to zone out because you’ve heard this before, but please keep reading.

I spent a lot of nights crying because I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know who I was. I didn’t know that I didn’t have to have it all together. I didn’t know anything because I had no stability. I wish I knew about God’s character. This is something I started to learn a few years after I started to follow Jesus. The reality is that life is hard and full of ups and downs. Tragedies happen. This isn’t going to change if you’re a Christian. Life sucks sometimes. This world sucks. But guess what? Jesus doesn’t.

The truth is that when you are able to describe different characteristics of God, you are able to have Him be your anchor. When hard times and tribulations come, you are able to hold onto the truth about God vs. The fear and anxiety you’re feeling.

For a tangible way to go about this?

  • Pull out a journal or notebook and write out characteristics of God. (Faithful, good, protector, comforter, strong, peaceful, etc)

  • Write out specific bible verses/ passages that go along with this characteristic. Because when you are going through a hard time, you have these verses to cling onto.

  • Write out a time in your life that you have seen God come through in each characteristic. When we have seen His faithfulness in our life before, we WILL see it again.

I look back and wish I did things differently. I wish that I spent more time learning who God was and less time on social media. I wish I didn’t spend so much time with trivial high school things. Because the blunt truth is that even 2 months after high school, so much that you worried about and payed attention to, WILL NOT MATTER. I know that if I dedicated at least a few minutes a day learning more about God’s character, it would have saved me a lot of tears and anxiety. Because in my opinion, high school is one of the hardest times of life. Maybe not physically, but most definitely mentally. High school is the time where you are trying to figure out who you are and what’s ok and what’s not ok.

It’s a mental rollercoaster and without God’s help, it can seem unbearable and absolutely hopeless. My advice? Get to know God more.

Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Philippians 3:10, “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,”

All of Ephesians 6 !!!!

Friend, life is hard. No doubt about it, but when you start learning who God is and the rule He plays in your life, life doesn’t seem so scary. It’s not so scary because you know who is truly in control: JESUS! Get some other girls together and just read the word. If you don’t understand it, use resources to help you understand it. We live in a time like no other that we have all the resources at the tips of our fingers. We have commentaries, we have books, podcasts, blog posts, and SO MUCH MORE!

Please pursue Christ. This is crucial to your development with Jesus.
