Coffee Dates with God

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I go to coffee shops a lot. Yep that would be right! Whenever I have a few free hours I enjoy going to different coffee shops and plopping myself down with my bible & whatever book I am reading at the time. I find that I am most restful when I am at a coffee shop with my bible. This is not to look "hip" or to "fit in" but merely to have a coffee date with the Lord.

When I sit down with my Iced Vanilla latte or Iced Americano (depending on if I have $5 or $2) I ask what my intentions are for this time. What do I want to accomplish? What do I need to talk to God about? Is there anything I need to process?

You may ask at this point, what do you mean coffee date with God? Well, what I mean is that I set aside this time for the Lord and I sit at the table telling Him what is going on in my life, asking for His guidance, surrendering my fears and doubts to Him, and simply building this relationship between Him and I.

You may say, "Rachael that is silly and kind of weird." Well, think about it.. what do you do when you meet a friend for coffee? You give them life updates, you ask for advice, you tell them what you are struggling with and you are building that trust and friendship. Same thing with these coffee dates with God.

God deserves your attention and your focus. Not only that, but he desires your heart. In Exodus 34:14 it says,"For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God." The Lord is literally JEALOUS for you, my beautiful friend. It hurts his heart when you go to your sin for comfort. It hurts him when you try to do everything on your own. It hurts him when you would rather do bad things to cover up your hurt instead of running to him for help. He desires for us to be close to Him and to spend time with Him.

I know a lot of people who have their time with Jesus at home and that is awesome. I find that it is incredibly hard for me to be at home and spend time with Him because there are so many distractions. It is really easy to go play with my pups, go watch Netflix, lay in bed, binge eat, the list can go on forever. So this is a tangible way for me to resist the temptations and distractions.

When I am out in public, I find that my undivided attention is on Him and nothing else. Usually he tells me to talk to the person next to me or the barista. He encourages me to encourage them. Because of his overflowing love for me, I am able to share that love with others around me. I have started this thing where I buy someone else a coffee when I go to a coffee shop. Like if Jesus was here, I would buy him a cup of coffee. But instead, he wants me to bless someone else with the coffee that I would buy for Him.

So go out to your local coffee shop and have a date with God.. you will not be disappointed.
