He is a Present Help in my Sin.

He is a Present Help in my Sin.

If you are struggling with overcoming an addiction and don’t believe that God is big enough to help you overcome that, let me encourage you. But first, close your eyes and open your hands. Simply invite God to be present with you. Tell Him you cannot do this on your own and you need help. Thank Him for being a good Father who desires to help you.

Now that we have our heart’s ready, let me start. Something that truly has helped me have self control in all sin is Psalm 46.

Psalm 46:1-11,

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

When I get tempted with something, I repeat these words back to myself.

“God is my refuge.”

“God is my strength.”

“He is my very present help in trouble.”

“He is with me.”

“He is my fortress.”

“I just need to acknowledge that He is God and I can be still.”

I think we doubt the power of Jesus’ name. I think we doubt the power of scripture. We have grown up learning that we need to provide for ourselves and handle our problems by ourselves. But that isn’t the case when we come into the family of God.

Ephesians 1:5, “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure."

We are not on our own. We are hidden in Jesus Christ. Therefore, we need to rely on Jesus’ power, strength, grace, and love. If we are going to be tempted in the same ways that Jesus was, don’t you think we should respond the same way Jesus did? (Read Matthew 4!)

So friend, He IS there for you. He IS there for your time of temptation. He is waiting for you to turn to Him instead of giving into the world. The verse everyone says for temptation, 1 Corinthians 10:13, “ No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide a way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

Here’s the honest truth. You cannot handle your temptation. You need Jesus. You need His strength, you need His word, and you need Him to anchor you. There is nothing that Jesus hasn’t accomplished. Therefore, you walk in HIS victory. Do you see where it says, “God is faithful” and that he will “provide a way of escape?”

See the correlation of Psalm 46:1 and this verse?

He DESIRES to help you, but you need to choose Him. Yes, it take humility. Yes, it takes grace. Yes, it takes denying yourself. But He is worth it. He is so faithful to being the best helper out there.

Lean into Him with ALL your temptations. Don’t allow yourself to believe the lie that you have to fight it on your own, friend.
